Machu Picchu’s World Wonder Status at Risk
Machu Picchu, Peru’s most iconic tourist attraction and one of the New7Wonders of the World since 2007, is facing a major challenge. According to a report by Gestion.pe, the organization behind the global designation has warned that Machu Picchu could lose its World Wonder title due to lack of integrated management by the Peruvian government.
What’s Happening in Cusco?
The Regional Government of Cusco (Gore Cusco), led by Governor Werner Salcedo, has proposed creating an autonomous authority to manage Machu Picchu and nearby archaeological sites such as Ollantaytambo and Moray. This proposal aims to decentralize control from Peru’s Ministry of Culture (Mincul) and give local authorities greater decision-making power.
Meanwhile, the Cusco Chamber of Tourism disagrees, arguing that tourism management should remain under national and international strategy rather than regional oversight. Critics say that Cusco’s regional authorities lack the technical and logistical capacity to manage a UNESCO World Heritage Site of such magnitude.
Key Issues at Stake
Autonomous Management Proposal: Gore Cusco suggests that Machu Picchu should be managed by a multisectoral authority focused on sustainable tourism and cultural preservation.
Digital Ticketing System: Authorities are pushing for 100% online ticket sales to ensure transparency and traceability for visitors.
Tourism Infrastructure: Discussions also include the future of the Chinchero Airport, the Sanctuary Lodge hotel, and transport systems (bus and rail).
Financial Transparency: Both regional leaders and private tourism representatives have criticized how the Ministry of Culture allocates funds, with accusations of excessive spending on bureaucracy instead of site maintenance.
Impact on Tourism
So far in 2025, Machu Picchu has received over 858,000 visitors (up to July), slightly higher than the same period in 2024. However, there has been a slowdown in June and July compared to previous years, raising concerns about future visitor numbers.
Industry experts warn that even though UNESCO, not New7Wonders, is the body that officially recognizes Machu Picchu as a World Heritage Site, the current controversy could discourage international travelers. For tourists, reliability and world-class tourism operations are key factors in choosing destinations.
Why It Matters for Peru?
Machu Picchu is not only a cultural treasure but also a vital engine for Peru’s tourism economy. Any uncertainty surrounding its management or international recognition could directly impact local businesses, jobs, and the country’s global image.
